This morning I spent some time with a woman that I went to high school with and ate delicious treats that had been grown in a rooftop garden in Manhattan. Yes I know...I am the luckiest. It was the most delightful combination of conversation and frittata I have had in weeks. I don't know if any of you have someone from your past who seemed to always be around but was never quite one of your best friends for no other reason than something silly like age or proximity. Well when I started this Date My City project, I decided to say yes to anyone from my life who wanted to do something interesting. Enter a fellow high school thespian and current FBI bad ass, Kristina, who sent me a facebook message saying she just happen to be in the city on vacation and she would love to catch up!
So I said yes. And I went. After following her life on social media for years (including one of the most beautiful weddings I have ever seen!), I sensed that she had grown into a wonderful woman, but I had no idea just how lovely the conversation would be. She is the kind of woman who asks questions and really listens. She laughs at bad jokes out of kindness --- or maybe because she truly thinks they are funny. She cares deeply for people who cannot always be around. She orders the big breakfast and eats it all like a champ. And she takes photos, offers aesthetic advice, and will walk aimlessly with you, without complaint, in the 94 degree heat searching for a pier and boat that will never be found. Most importantly, I envy her ability to spend time alone and be happy exploring a new place with only herself and a cellphone. It takes true character to do that --- and true courage to ask to spend time with someone you haven't seen in a decade. It was very refreshing to be reminded of that kind of character and gumption.
And what a delight to get to share this breakfast together at ROSEMARY'S in the West Village. If you can't tell from the pictures below --- Rosemary's serves amazing fresh food, some of which is picked from their very own rooftop garden...which you are free to visit!!! Head down there and oder the Nutella Panini and a delicious fresh season juice! You won't be sad you did!!
