When it comes to date nights in New York City there are endless options. I don’t get to spend many evenings with my fiancé because we both work a lot at night. So when we happen to have the night off together --- and we aren’t both so tired that all we want to do is stay in bed, eat nachos, and watch ‘Doctor Who’ ---we really do attempt to try something special. And you all know I LOVE a theme night --- so date night this week was all about The Lion King. Bold patterns, West African flavors, and an evening of beautiful music sung in Swahili? YES PLEASE! I set up this whole evening as a surprise for Craig who had no idea where we were going or what we were doing! I laid out a great outfit for him and off we went!
I have always wanted to try Ethiopian food! I lived in Tanzania for a while and have always had a passion for West African flavors but have never had the pleasure of eating Ethiopian cuisine. Craig had always talked about how one of the best meals he had ever had was at a small Ethiopian restaurant in Chicago --- so I found the most wonderful restaurant on the Upper West Side. Awash Ethiopian Food is a small restaurant tucked away in the upper 90’s. Craig and I noshed on veggie combination platters that were full of delicious flavors. We sopped up all the sauces and spicy veggies with our bare hands and the most amazing injera bread (sourdough-risen flatbread with a unique, slightly spongy texture). If you haven’t tried Ethiopian you really must get your hands dirty and dig in soon!
As we walked to the theatre, we got stopped three times by strangers asking me where I got my outfit. You know how sometimes you see something in the store and you know it was made just for you? That is how I feel about this top and amazing skirt from H&M. I saw them the week before I was planning this date night and I just thought the skirt was so magical. The bold print and earthy, yet bright, colors reminded me of the costumes from The Lion King so I just had to buy it. Lovelies, I have never felt more confident in an outfit. The cut of the scalloped neoprene top paired with the high waist of the skirt makes me feel like a million bucks! And doesn’t Craig look so “Clark Kent” handsome in his mod tie and Warby Parkers? What a lucky lady I am!
After the show we walked home humming “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and feeling so full from our delicious Ethiopian dinner. What a magical night of theatre, fashion, and treats. The only thing that could have made it better is if I had been able to share it all with you!
